Preserving sacred knowledge for the next generation

Madrassahs, along with maktabs (or kuttab), trace their traditions back through nearly a thousand years of Islamic learning. Till today, they remain the single most vital tool for preserving Prophetic knowledge and cultivating it amongst the masses of the Ummah.

Ummah Welfare Trust continues to support and strengthen these indispensable institutions. Through subsidies, renovations and sponsorship programmes, the charity has helped establish hundreds of madrassahs and maktabs in recent years, alhamdulillah.

What are the needs in Sierra Leone?

01

Comprehensive education that caters to the beliefs and values of these children.

02

Children in the poorest regions of the world grow up illiterate and struggle to meet modern demands.

03

Poverty means many families cannot afford good schooling for their children who inevitably suffer later in their lives.

The world is cursed and what is in it is cursed, except the remembrance of Allah and what facilitates that, or one who has knowledge or one who seeks knowledge.

[Ibn Majah]

How we provide the best Maktab education

01

Identifying and Assessing Needs

An assessment of the Islamic educational needs of children in Sierra Leone is carried out by Ummah Welfare Trust. Based on the level of need, different areas are assigned an intervention grade.

02

Recruiting and Training Teachers

Ummah Welfare Trust recruits and provides weekly training to all teachers in educational methods, pedagogy and Islamic teachings and values. This can help to ensure that the quality of education provided is high and that the teachings are accurate.

03

Providing Resources and Materials

Ummah Welfare Trust provides the necessary resources and materials to support the educational programs. This includes coursebooks, stationary, and other materials that can enhance the learning experience for children within the Maktab.

04

Monitoring and Evaluation

Ummah Welfare Trust regularly monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the educational programs. This can help to identify areas of improvement and ensure that the programs are meeting the needs of the children.
